Telecloud DRP/PRA

Maximise the availability of your critical applications.

Telecloud DRP – IT Disaster Recovery Plan

Do you need a guarantee that your critical cloud-hosted applications will be available at all times? With the Telecloud DRP (disaster recovery plan) services proposed by KDDI France, you define the availability scenario for your activity. If disaster strikes, your applications are restarted from a remote site within previously agreed time frames.

Synchronous or asynchronous DRP?

KDDI France proposes a range of disaster recovery plans to maximise security for your critical applications hosted on its cloud infrastructure. All of them are designed to mitigate the impacts of a disaster at a site by minimising application down times. There are two types of disaster recovery plan, depending on the IaaS hosting solution selected.

  • Asynchronous: data are replicated at a remote site at regular intervals. In the event of a disaster at the main site, the critical applications restart at the backup site on the basis of the latest replication under previously agreed conditions (downtime, restart time, etc.).
Telecloud’s asynchronous DRP solutions are proposed in conjunction with KDDI’s Telecloud Agility infrastructure offering.
  • Synchronous: the data are replicated constantly between two sites, via an Active/Active architecture. In the event of a disaster at one of the sites, no data are lost and activity continues from the other site.
Telecloud’s synchronous or Active/Active DRP solutions are proposed in conjunction with the Telecloud Director virtual data centre offering.

Asynchronous DRP services

Proposed as a complement to the Telecloud Agility offering, KDDI’s Telecloud asynchronous DRP solution enables your virtual machines to resume operation from a remote site.

It is based on the following key services:

  • Regular, asynchronous data replications at the remote site
  • DRP activated in the event of a disaster, by triggering the fallback IT configuration within the allotted time frame (RTO)
  • Initial configuration restored once the disaster has passed
  • One-stop shop and dedicated contact people

RPO and RTO: disaster recovery objectives

Asynchronous disaster recovery plans are tailored to the criticality of your applications and virtual machines hosted on Telecloud Agility infrastructure, based on two key parameters:

  • RPO or Recovery Point Objective: the maximum window of time during which data loss is tolerable in the event of a failure. (The RPO is used to determine the backup intervals, depending on the volume of data stored)
  • RTO or Recovery Time Objective: the maximum tolerable down time of an IT resource (server, network, application) following a major service incident.
  •

KDDI’s Telecloud asynchronous DRP offering enables three combinations of RTO and RPO to be configured, depending on your service availability requirements.

  • RPO 24 hours / RTO 4 hours
  • RPO 1 hour / RTO 4 hours
  • RPO 5 minutes / RTO 4 hours

Asynchronous DRP technology

The Telecloud asynchronous DRP solution proposed as a complement to Telecloud Agility is underpinned by VMWare’s Site Recovery Manager™ (SRM) technology.

Coupled with redundant storage bays, SRM enables an RPO of just 5 minutes to be achieved and offers the following capabilities:
  • IT disaster recovery plan coordinated at virtual machine level, with a different RPO and RTO depending on application criticality,
  • Failover and recovery testing with no break in service, based on the same plans as those defined for an actual failure,
  • Automated failover and recovery, doing away with most of the manual processes included in conventional DRPs to ensure a coherent, streamlined recovery.

Active/Active DRP services

Proposed as a complement to the Telecloud Director offering, KDDI’s Telecloud synchronous DRP solution keeps your virtual data centre operating continuously.

The Active/Active architecture ensures synchronous replication between two sites, guaranteeing that no data are lost. This solution also offers the possibility of sharing the load between the two data centres and of meeting continuity requirements in the event of an outage at one of the sites. This offering enables you to roll out a specific disaster recovery plan for your highly critical applications.

DRP user guide

Phase1

In the event of an incident

First stage of an asynchronous DRP

  • Alert sent to KDDI’s operations centre and your accredited teams
  • Confirmation of recovery plan activation

Phase2

Activating the DRP

Second stage of an asynchronous DRP

  • Countdown to RTO started
  • Servers started up on the backup platform
  • Environment configuration (infrastructure and networks) checked
  • Visual check to ensure the virtual servers have restarted (login page)

Phase3

Failover to the remote site

Third stage of an asynchronous DRP

  • Supervision of failover (network routing, firewall, VPN)
  • Notification of administrator access availability
  • Confirmation of accessibility
  • Countdown RTO stopped
  • Functional checks (systems and applications)
